Dear Patient: How to Select a Dentist (and how to Avoid it)
It's time for you to seek out an experienced dentist. Perhaps you're new to the area, or perhaps you're looking for to make a change. There are some factors to consider when searching for a dentist that is right for you. It's tempting to go to the nearest dental office or to rely on the recommendation of a neighbor however, I would advise you to invest your time in finding the ideal dental facility for you.
How to choose the right dentist
Check their credentials
Clearly, they went to dental school, but what else? It takes lots of energy to keep up with new technologies and treatments in the field of health care. What other training have they taken? What amount of continuing education does the staff do every year? Does the entire staff keep up their training? Everyone in your office should be providing the best possible dental treatment. They also treat you with respect.
Check out the office, and then inquire about their technology
While nobody needs to own the latest gadgets or gadgets, they do need to keep up-to-date. Are offices computerized or do they use traditional charts on paper? Do you Family Dentist in Tucson smell of mothballs and stale cigarettes smoke upon entering? Do you see the office well-organized and clean? Do they have the tools to show you what's happening inside your mouth? There are many offices that have digital xrays and intraoral cameras. Are they willing to to check your mouth?
Discuss what you can expect during your visit with the new patient
Ask what you can expect from your appointment as new patient and what time it will take. Even though you may think you're just trying to get your teeth cleaned but your oral health is more complex than the six-month checkup you are accustomed to. The appointment for new patients should be between one and two hours, and may not even include your cleaning! Speaking with your dentist and other staff members should be permitted to help you understand and establish your goals for health. A comprehensive practice is one that takes time to complete this.
Speak to local experts
If you are unsure, talk to specialists. Periodontists and endodontists are able to see patients from any part of the local community. They understand how the offices interact with their patients as well as with colleagues. If you phone three or four, hopefully you'll get a call more than once.
How do you select the right dentist
It is time-consuming choosing the best service for your needs. But consider the amount of time you'll spend with a bad provider. It is possible that you will spend more time searching for solutions than treating the actual problem.
Over time, I've learned how most people choose their dentist. These strategies may appear simpler but they're not as efficient in obtaining the dental care you need.
You can find the list in your insurance company
While this might seem like the most efficient way to increase your insurance benefits and save money, it's not the best choice. It is best to select your dentist from a list. Your insurance provider may not always be looking out for your best interests. Unfortunately, your insurance company doesn't always do enough to ensure you receive the best quality work. So don't think of the names on this list as a "recommendation"--it's simply a list of offices that have agreed to the terms and pricing set by the insurance company.
The price tag
Like many things in life, less expensive dental treatments are not always cheaper in the long run. A good dentist will save you time, money and physical pain. In my 25-year professional career I've seen stunning and ugly dentistry with all sorts of prices. Often the least expensive dentistry isn't always the most comprehensive. as an example, you may have a significant tooth with a cavity and even though you can put an enormous filling for less, down the road, that tooth could crack, need a root canal, or worse yet, need to be removed and an implant put in. Therefore, for the cost of an excellent-fitting crown from the beginning, you could save thousands of dollars.
When someone tells you that your dentist is "nice"
While it is true that rapport is crucial in any relationship, but especially with your health care providers, "nice" doesn't always correlate to the quality of the care you receive. I've had the pleasure of working with a variety of nice dentists, and I would never have let them treat me with dental care. Ask to see the results of their dental work; look at before and after pictures and x-rays of crowns they have done. How do their teeth appear to you? Do you think it appears natural? The x-rays should not reveal the dark spots or ledges that surround crowns. Ask them to describe what you're seeing and what makes it so amazing.
The office is just around the corner
It's great to have convenience however it doesn't guarantee that you will be able to find the perfect fit particularly in the current hectic world. This is something I am reminded of often on my way to work. I drive by many dental clinics and I consider, perhaps I should be working there. It's well worth the effort to look at how my office offers care.
A dentist who is willing to take the time to listen to you, set goals and assess your future needs, will ensure that you enjoy a lifetime of healthy teeth. And good oral health willin turn enhance your overall wellbeing and prolong your life. Make smart decisions. It could save your life.
